In a show of force dockworkers on BC's ports have refused to submit to background checks [1] which they argue are an invasion of the Privacy Act, its Charter of Rights and its human-rights code.
"Transport Canada had given workers in restricted port areas, and managers and company representatives needing regular access to them, until Dec. 15 to obtain security clearances -- or be refused work."
Unionized dockworkers refused the order, which would have required they supply personal information on themselves, their spouses and ex-spouses, and to agree that fingerprints and photos can be shared with Canadian police and intelligence services and with foreign governments.
However, with the bosses facing a shutdown of the ports next week Transport Canada backed down extending the deadline until Feb 20th.
Let's hope the dockworkers stay strong and continue to defeat this draconian and racist attack on working people.
