It’s a Student Strike, a People’s Struggle

Statement by CLASSE
Translated by Richard Fidler

Hike in tuition fees is part of “the cultural revolution”

For several weeks now a student revolt has shaken the neoliberal consensus imposed for many years by the Quebec and Canadian governments. It was sparked by the announcement of a new, 75 per cent increase in university tuition fees.

UCL: Free our comrades - Solidarity is not a crime

Below is a statement from our anarkismo sister organization in Quebec, Union Communiste Libertaire.

Free our comrades - Solidarity is not a crime

The UCL calls for solidarity in the wake of demonstrations against the G20 Summit in Toronto and the intense political repression that accompanied it. About thirty of us went to Toronto to demonstrate with the Anti-Capitalist Convergence (CLAC-2010) and with our comrades in the anarchist organization, Common Cause. What we saw and what we experienced revolted us to the extreme, and that is why we take the streets again on Thursday July 1st to denounce the repression and demand the release of all detainees.

Quebec public sector unions unite in a "Common Front"

By Nicolas Phébus
Quebec correspondent

On Oct. 30, the public sector unions in Québec made their central demands for the negotiations with the province. Under the banner "together for public services", they are demanding a negotiated agreement that includes better pay, improved retirement plans and accommodation of workers family commitments. The demands are backed by a “Common Front” of unions representing 475,000 workers in health care, social services, education, public service and government agencies. While the mobilization is not yet impressive, and may never become, some unions and activists are taking positive steps for wider grassroots participation.
